Using an automatic installation tool like Fantastico can make a huge difference in the amount of time it takes to set up a new WordPress site. I personally prefer to use Softaculous for this as it allows you more control over your Database prefix. Fantastico uses the default WordPress DB prefix of wp- which is known to every hacker in the universe. As you might think, this can cause you problems later on. If you only have Fantastico or something similar available to you there is an easy way around this.

Just install the “Better WP Security” plugin, and among the many options within the settings you will find a section that will allow you to effortlessly change this to something harder to guess. Basically, anything BUT wp is good. But it’s best to stick with numbers and lowercase letters for this as adding the wrong special character to your DB prefix can render your WordPress site inoperable because the software that runs WordPress may not be able to connect to your DB.

Manually installing WordPress is not difficult if you know what you’re doing, but can be a Nightmare for new WordPress users and should be avoided by them at all costs.

Whatever you do, don’t let installing WordPress stop you from having a self hosted blog. Free blogs are great, but only by hosting a site on your own domain can you really get the most out of blogging. Free blogs do not allow you to use Premuim Themes, or install any plugins in an effort to level the playing field.

While this may help on a site like or Blogger, you really miss out on some of the best features of WordPress. Plugins and themes allow you to personalize your site and make it stand out from the crowd. Nothing will prove more valuable to you in the long run than customizing your blog.
